Household Hazardous Waste Events

Four Corners Health Department announced today that it will receive $29,250 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust for the “Household Hazardous Waste Events” project. The Trust Board announced funding for the project at its meeting on April 4, 2019 in Lincoln. This is the first year of the award with a potential for 2nd and 3rd year funding totaling $29,250 for each year. This is one of 117 projects receiving $19,501,444 in grant awards from the Nebraska Environmental Trust this year. Of these, 85 were new applications and 32 are carry-over projects.

Four Corners Health Department is looking forward to hosting Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal events in Polk and Butler counties in the spring of 2020, events in York and Seward Counties in 2021, and events in Polk and Butler Counties again in 2022. Our rural communities have no way to dispose of household hazardous waste such as leftover paint and other chemicals without these events. Instead, these hazardous materials carry the risk of ending up in the landfills and could potentially reach our ground water. Four Corners Health Department has hosted these events for the last 6 years with tremendous response and participation from the communities. The dates for the 2020 events in Polk and Butler counties will be publicized and on the Four Corners website ( once they are set.

The Nebraska Legislature created the Nebraska Environmental Trust in 1992. Using revenue from the Nebraska Lottery, the Trust has provided over $305 million in grants to over 2,200 projects across the state. Anyone including citizens, organizations, communities, farmers, and businesses can apply for funding to protect habitat, improve water quality and establish recycling programs in Nebraska. The Nebraska Environmental Trust works to preserve, protect and restore our natural resources for future generations.
